Roadblock:  I can stay committed to exercise if….It doesn’t cost too much.

Safe detour:  Outside is free.  Some mittens and ear muffs and I can be good to go.  There are even enough places that you can walk inside in NJ (like the malls) so that the weather or darkness don’t even need to stand in the way.

Variations on a theme:

…no one will see me doing it.

Safe detour:  I can be so bundled up that I am all but unrecognizable.  One of my clients, uncomfortable about her size, solved this concern by walking in the Celery Farm before work.  The path is narrow and winding, and pretty quiet that early in the day.  There can be a bunch of cars there and you still never actually cross paths with anyone.

…it doesn’t require any skill.

Safe detour:  I personally hate to compete (no doubt because I hate to lose – don’t need Freud for that one).  There are tons of options to for this one.  Not only can you do classes where no skill is required, no points are kept, no one critiques you, and it isn’t a competitive type of thing anyway…but you can also stand in the back, take classes at an adult ed where it is often conducted in a room with no mirrors, or even spin (which is in the dark and, because you are sitting on a bike hunched over, no one can even see your body!
