Roadblock:  I can stay committed to exercise if…I have an exercise buddy.   I have seen this work really well for people who have the same lifestyle as each other, like moms who drop the kids at school and walk immediately.   But just as often (more frequently actually) their partner’s excuse to bail becomes their excuse to bail.  It’s hard to count on someone else to indefinitely provide your momentum.

Safe detour:  Use someone else as your springboard (even a trainer), but start going on your own simultaneously.  This way, their energy can give you the jump start you need, but you have already begun to create your own new habit – essentially making them your training wheels.  Making friends with the regulars at classes is another, perhaps more reliable version of this tactic.  They may feel exactly like you do about getting to the gym and have had to conquer their own resistance.  Classes are a time commitment like an appointment, and it is especially effective if you are particular about the instructors and want to take a particular person’s class.  You can’t keep delaying it like you can with your own home treadmill by… just starting the laundry or …just checking your emails, etc.
