Just Interesting Stuff: Biggest Loser Article Editorial Comment…Renewed Hope For The Hopeless

May 9, 2016

Well if that wasn’t just about the most disempowering article ever!!  My internal cookie monster would have had a field day with that if I weren’t better informed, better nourished and better habit-ed now.  “Ah well,” it would have said. […]

Book & Newsletters: Willpower Is Not A Prerequisite (Holidays 2015)

Oct 30, 2015

“”This should be the worst thing that anyone can ever say about you (that I have no willpower where food is concerned),” a wise and compassionate therapist once said to me as I mentally and emotionally tortured myself for caving in yet one more disappointing and demoralizing time. I never forgot that and by some grace I could get with that sad but true fact and move on to sharper tools in my toolbox.”…Holiday Mood Swings…Tips Are Not Enough…Co-op Rescue…

Book & Newsletters: Something Out Of Nothing – Creating Structure In The Summer (Summer 2015)

Oct 30, 2015

“As much as my clients look forward to summer for the anticipated relief from the grinding routine of getting their kids everywhere they need to be (illusion though this often turns out to be!), this very lack of structure poses its own challenges. In all my years of working with fellow weight challenged individuals, I have not met a single soul who can successfully fly by the seat of their pants where food is concerned – at least not in this culture – whether that structure is as tight as pre-made meals (made by them or purchased that way), or as loose as option 1, 2 or 3. A simple template like: “keep the focus on protein, produce and healthy fats, and start the day with any kind of movement” can whittle down the complexity of most any circumstance.”…Summer ToolBox…Safe Sunscreen…

That there is a whole second universe of little critters living within your gastrointestinal tract, a universe that outnumbers your cells 150:1 with 150-300 times more DNA than we have in our own bodies, a universe that influences more than 6,300 biological functions from your immune system, your moods, your genes and yes even to the hormones that regulate appetite, cravings, metabolism and fat storage? Wow!”…Gut Health And Mood…Strategies For The Veggie Challenged…

Book & Newsletters: A Scone By Any Other Name (Spring 2015)

Oct 30, 2015

“I used to joke that when I die they are going to have to take out my appetite and beat it with a bat, so constant was my longing and preoccupation with food. I managed my weight because I understood how to work a caloric budget to save up for an repay indulgences. To the total credit of environmental control which I still assiduously practice, I could contain my treat eating to pre-selected times and places. Who knew however that my appetite was being hijacked daily by the food choices I was making?”…Is A Calorie Not Just A Calorie?…Andrea’s Story…

Book & Newsletters: What I Really Needed To Know (New Years 2015)

Oct 30, 2015

“I am a graduate of every diet on planet earth (both sensible and ridiculous), could recite the principles of good nutrition and exercise chapter and verse. I’d start out bulletproof, basking in the after glow of weight loss success, until bafflingly, would again find myself derailed and frustrated, just waiting to cycle around to being ready again. I remember when that cost me forty pounds in a single semester.

In all fairness, those programs taught me everything that I had paid to learn…but nothing of what I really needed to know. What to eat was the easy part. How to get myself to do it? Ahhh, now there’s the rub.”..I Did It My Way – Emma’s Story…Power Hour…Got Grace?

Book & Newsletters: Keeping A Grip On Myself Through The Holidays ( December 2014)

Oct 30, 2015

“Halloween can easily be an early catalyst for the annual six week Thanksgiving to New Years “Tornado Season” of weight management, each holiday potentially cutting a swath of destruction of our healthy habits in its wake.

With that concern no doubt in mind, my friend Camille from the gym asked me if I could offer her a single lifesaving holiday diet tip since she was entering her very first holiday season a full seventy-five pounds lighter than she had been in the last 20 years.”…Food Addiction For The Non-Addictive?…Thanksgiving Self Makeover…

Book & Newsletters: No Plan Is Still A Plan (End of School Year 2014)

Oct 29, 2015

“Ah June, the month for serial celebrations. I have finally learned never to try to make any plans or even try to speak with my friends with children for the entire month of June. Back in the day (oh, here we go, right?) the end of the school year was just that – the end of the school year. We all went home. Summer vacation. See ya in September.

Now though, June is a jam packed whirl wind of graduations from kindergarten, sixth grade, middle school, after care, Lord knows what, plus all those traditional June weddings! And all heralded in with multiple Memorial Day weekend BBQs (see: Blogs>Surviving Myself>Strategies for the BBQ Challenged)! How on earth does one manage all that celebratory eating? One thing is clear: if I don’t have plans for how to manage all these challenging June environments, then all these challenging June environments have plans for managing me.”…Volume Eaters Take Heart…BudgetBytes.com…

Book & Newsletters: After This Is Now (Spring 2014)

Oct 29, 2015

“Ah Spring…at last. Birds chirping, sun shining, peeling off all these layers. Uh oh…that means “the big reveal”!

Now, I wish I had buckled down over the winter so that would sound like good news rather than the dreaded de-camouflaging of this extra body fat I promised myself I absolutely would not carry into 2014.

So this year, rather than the short-lived guilt relief of a strict diet, what if I lived within the budget and habits of my goal weight self right now and just waited for my body to catch up, since that is what I have to do eventually anyway – sort of like adapting my life to my retirement income in advance of retiring?

“OK, but after the holiday,” my overweight self screams, once again vainly hoping that I can skip over learning how to manage some challenging circumstance now and will, at some future date, apparently magically be willing and capable of doing this without any prior practice. Sooner or later, “after this” is now.”…Blue Apron – Adventures in Gourmet Cooking – Delivered!…Saturated Fat Vindicated?!
